Ronaldinho to MLS?

There have been plenty of rumors regarding Ronaldinho’s future. One of them is that he is possibly headed to MLS. Of course, the team that is supposedly courting him is the LA Galaxy. They always seem to be involved whenever a big name player is available in the transfer market.

This wouldn’t be a wise move for the Galaxy. Their salary cap is already being dominated by big three contracts (Beckham, Donovan, Ruiz). They’re struggling far too much at the back to pay out another massive contract to a midfielder.

Of course, bringing Ronaldinho over to MLS wouldn’t be a smart move for any team. The only reason he’s available is because his current club has decided that they no longer feel compelled to keep him.

This is because Ronaldinho has had some fitness issues. A lot of them can be attributed to injury, but there’s also talk of him loving to eat a bit too much. His work ethic is also being questioned. ESPN and most of the media in the United States would have a field day ripping on MLS if they brought this guy over and he did nothing but be a sloth. This would kill any sort of momentum that the league has been building.

There’s no doubt that Ronaldinho has a lot of skill. It’s just that he’s too much of a risk considering all of the fitness and work ethic issues, especially since a team would have to shell out big cash to sign him.

Even if this were a possibility for the MLS, L.A. definitely can’t be in the running with the dreadful defense I saw this weekend against United.

If MLS wants to seem like a top-flight league, they have to stop taking Europe’s leftovers. They’re turning into the Newark Bears of the soccer world.

  3. Den Cotton Says:

Yeah, unfortunately, America is where old European stars go to die. It’s always been that way, but I still think the Beckham move was good for the league, although perhaps in the short term — which may give even more teeth to your point.

Are you insane? Even an out of shape Ronaldinho is better than almost every other player in MLS. Ronaldinho has many good years ahead, and I can not see him playing in a substandard league like MLS. He’s going to Chelsea or AC Milan.

  5. Alan Says:

An out of shape Ronaldinho is good to no one. His ability to create the amazing depends on what type of shape he is in.

An out of shape Ronaldinho would be a detriment to any MLS team because he would be brought over to impress the fans, not to just jog around and merely be average. All it would do is make the team and the league look bad.
