Euro 2008 Semifinals predictions

By: Alan Velasco

The quarterfinals were a bit rough for me as I was only able to pick one winner. Fortunately, that one winner was Spain, who I chose to win the entire thing. So I’m still feeling pretty confident. Now it’s time to pick the winners of the semifinals.

Germany vs. Turkey
On paper, this isn’t even a fair matchup. Turkey will be forced to play without its captain Nihat Kavehci, as well as Servet Cetin, Tumer Metin and Emre Belozoglu because of injuries. They’ll also have to make do without Tuncay Sanli, Arda Turan, and Emre Asik because of suspensions. All of these players played a critical part in helping Turkey make it this far. Germany on the other hand hasn’t had any such problems to worry about. They’ll be pumped to go out and face a squad that is utterly decimated. Germany will easily win this one because Turkey just has way too much to overcome. Turkey was looking like a true Cinderella team, but their run will most likely come to and end.

Spain vs. Russia
The two teams to come out of Group D will meet once more. Spain won the first time convincingly, 4-1. The key difference this time around will be that Russia will have Andrei Arshavin out on the pitch. The Russian side is a completely different team with him in the lineup. The Spanish backline will have a long day ahead of them, so it’s key that Carles Puyol keeps it all working smoothly. Spain will go into the game knowing that their forwards can slice through the Russians defense like they did in the first game. Spain will be victorious over the Russians in this encounter because the team as a whole is playing well, and the defense has been able to get rid of the silly mistakes. Also, I can’t just pick against the team I chose to win it all.
